Headset & Lavalier Microphone Setup

Today, we’re covering one of the most frequently requested—and admittedly most challenging—topics: dialing in tone for headset and lavalier (lapel) microphones.


Microphone Selection

Choosing the right microphone from the start is critical.


  • DPA 4066: Currently considered the industry gold standard and widely adopted. It offers exceptional clarity, a lightweight feel, and great comfort. However, due to its ultra-high resolution, it easily picks up ambient acoustics and feedback, requiring extra attention during tuning.

  • Countryman H6: In my experience, this model offers excellent feedback resistance. It’s slightly more affordable, with comfort and clarity very close to DPA, though availability can occasionally be limited.

  • Point Source Audio: I’ve read many positive reviews about their use in churches and theaters, though I haven’t had hands-on experience with them personally.


Step-by-Step Tone Shaping Workflow


Before starting, ensure your overall system Gain Structure is properly calibrated.

At least cut the ringing frequencies againt the feedback.


Step 1: Microphone Placement


Position the headset capsule relative to the corner of the mouth. If the speaker’s plosives are strong, angle it slightly downward. Adjust the capsule distance based on the speaker’s vocal projection.


Step 2: Input Gain Staging


Aim for a sufficient, comfortable listening level rather than pushing gain to the absolute edge of feedback.


  • With proper system gain structure, you can achieve a proper volume before feedback occurs.

  • If feedback limits your headroom, establish a stable baseline gain first, then use gates, EQ, and input delay to increase the feedback margin.

  • Wireless Transmitters: Adjust the transmitter sensitivity/gain to match the speaker’s vocal dynamic before adjusting the console preamp.


Step 3: De-Esser

Use a De-Esser to control harsh sibilance (sounds like s, sh, ch, as well as high-frequency attacks from plosives like p and b). Sweep the frequency/threshold controls until harsh sibilance is smoothed out without dulling the voice.


Step 4: Gate / Expander

A powerful tool for cutting out room reflections and ambient bleed captured by the capsule.

  • Instead of a hard gate (commonly used on drums), use a gentle Downward Expander for natural attenuation.

  • Slightly softening the attack time can also help smooth out harsh plosive bursts (p, b sounds).


Step 5: Compression (Dynamic Control)

Set compression to tame extreme dynamic spikes. Uncontrolled volume peaks are often a primary trigger for acoustic feedback.


Step 6: EQ (Frequency Cleanup & Enhancement)

Once dynamics are stabilized via De-Esser, Gate, and Compressor, move to tone shaping:

  1. High-Pass Filter (HPF): Cut unnecessary low-end rumble to clear up muddy frequencies.

  2. Subtractive EQ: Carve out muddy or resonant frequencies to improve clarity.

  3. Additive EQ: Apply a subtle boost in the upper-mids or highs to add air and presence if needed.



Summary


Because most headset capsules are omnidirectional by design, managing feedback in live environments is an inherent challenge.


Rather than relying solely on aggressive microphone EQ to fight feedback, establishing proper system gain structure and venue tuning beforehand is the key to achieving a natural, open vocal tone.
